Skyfire on Grubenkar

Alpine climbing, once again...

Grubenkar Northeast-face in morning sun
Grubenkar Northeast-face in morning sun

During these tropical temperatures there are only two possibilities to fly from the heat. Either you jump into a cool lake, or you move your body to higher regions. The stable and hot Wednesday, July 21st, Benni Hangl sen. and I wanted to use for an alpine undertaking. On our to-do list was one of the highest walls in the Tyrolian area - Grubenkar Northeast face. We had chosen the route "Skyfire" (8, A0 - 1000m) first ascended by Matthias Robl. After some loose pitches, the rock in the center of the wall is really good and the climbing is always demanding, some sections are quite annoying - protection is not always possible above some ledges, mainly when you want to free climb the route. But after all we had a nice day in this huge face. We did not plan to take the never ending way all up to the summit - we abseiled down after the main difficulties. This turned out to be a wise desicion, when returning to the car we alreday were welcomed by a thunderstorm.
